National Championships Success in Mens Trips

It is with great pleasure we can report the success achieved by the Stute BC Men's Trips team of Phil Broughton, Dan Thornhill and Josh Grant. In the countrywide National Championships contested by 48 teams from 35 counties Josh, Dan and Phil reached the final on Sunday 28th. August to play Cumbria. In a closely contested and high quality game, played in a great spirit, the Cumbria trio of Keith Harrison and Mark & Stuart Irwin ran out narrow winners 14 shots to 10.

Just to reach the final Phil & co. had played five earlier rounds - beating Middlesex 19-14; Dorset 18-13; Gloucs B 25-10; Herts B 22-19 and Berks B 18-11. The latter skipped by a previous winner of the title.

It is a tremendous achievement by the three and the county is proud of the way you played and conducted yourself over 4 days of bowling. Well Done.

As if that wasn't enough bowling for Dan and Josh they had to move straight on to play Lincolnshire in the Pairs competition. Having played a nearly 4 hour final they then achieved a remarkable win against Lincolnshire (22-7) and a further win later in the same day against Cornwall (18-13). How these two guys could still stand, never mind play winning bowls is an amazing achievement too.

County Appearances Record and County Champions has been updated after the 2022 Season

Under the County History Tab - Derbyshire Appearances & County Champions

Midland Counties Francis Burton Trophy

We've never won the MCBA league so we entered the season without high expectations but we hoped to remain competitive, picking up team wins and rink wins where possible. With a tremendous effort by selectors Michael Bowley and Mark Terrell (Bob Prati stepped back from the role in the early season) we managed to field teams in all games. We had 14 new caps (see the Derbyshire Appearances section) overall and finished a very creditable 4th. in the League - i.e. halfway of the seven teams competing. It could have been much better too with a loss at Worcestershire only coming on the last end of the 6 rinks played.

For all MCBA games bowls with a WB stamp after the year 1985 will be legal to use after a review of the rules.

Final League Table 2022

The result of the 2022 Derbyshire League was in doubt until the last woods were bowled. Long Eaton 'A' won their last game against Long Eaton 'B' but the result on two rinks went down to the wire. Both rink results could easily have been reversed but the 'A' side hung on to win 9-0. The League now depended on Stute also achieving a 9-0 result but their efforts were thwarted by Derby West End who won a vital rink that made the final score 7-2. Well done to all who took part. Keeping the League running is a problem but is vital to the county Bowls scene.

MCBA Derbyshire v Nottinghamshire - 13th. August at Newark Northern BC

The team for the final MCBA game is now live under the County tab.

MCBA Derbyshire v Lincolnshire - 30th. July 2022

Well done to those selected for the Lincolnshire game which resulted in a 143 shots to 94 shots victory. Derbyshire received 18 points and Lincolnshire 4 points for this result. There was a notable performance by the rink of Charlie Lomax, Jack Ganderton, Adam Fletcher and John Bowley who did not allow their opponents to score in the first six ends and won after the 21 ends by 37 shots to 7. Other winning rinks were skipped by Ben Bywater, John Arnett and Russ Robinson, the latter winning by 1 shot when Russ carried the jack to make 4 shots to go into the lead for the first time with the final bowl of the game - good timing Russ! The full result is shown on the County page.

Ladies Section Update

The information that appears under the Ladies Section tab has been updated to include the 2022 Officials and the draw for the latter stages of the Ladies competitions that will lead to qualification at Leamington for the winners. A minor problem to be sorted means that to access the Ladies Fours and Senior Fours Competitions the only access is by the drop down menu under the Ladies Section tab. Accessing via the side (blue) tab will take you to the Men's draw (!!)

Two Wood Singles Competition

The Two Wood Singles competition was held on June 26th. 2022 at Long Eaton Town BC. The winner was Dean Shaw from Derby West End BC who beat Geoff Tait, Ben Bywater and Michael Bowley on his way to becoming Derbyshire's representative at Leamington in early September. Congratulations to Dean. The games were played on a very fast surface which was made even more difficult by a blustery wind blowing down the green jn one direction and against the play in the other direction. Despite this there were some high quality games with last year's champion Josh Smith fighting hard to retain his championship only to be beaten in the semi-final by Mike Bowley by one shot. Dean beat Ben Bywater in the other semi-final.

Middleton Cup Team Manager

Following the defeat by Lincolnshire Phil has indicated he would like to step aside from the Team Manager position for the 2023 Middleton Cup. He has several good reasons for wanting this - the most important of which is his commitment to his growing family (Congratulations again Phil and Helen, hope all goes well for you).

Phil has held this role for several seasons (7 to be exact) - and with some degree of success. The County have reached at least 3 Middleton Cup Quarter Finals and Balcomb Semi-finals twice. And with such a small squad of players to choose from the job has never been easy. I know, personally, that Phil has always given of his all to ensure the County has been represented by the best teams possible. He has spent hours considering combinations and made many phone calls and 'forced' changes to his first selections. It has not been easy. The county should be grateful to the commitment to the role he has brought and we certainly hope he will stay involved, especially in the Balcomb Trophy games, as well as playing other games for the county.

Thanks once again Phil - despite the difficulties you have done the best you can to keep Derbyshire as competitive as possible. Thank you for your efforts.

Harry Bowles - on behalf of the county

Middleton Cup v Lincolnshire 18th. June 2022

The game was played at East Leake Bowls Club who provided an excellent playing surface, welcome refreshments and good changing facilities, but unfortunately the weather did not live up to all the other excellent conditions! Played in persistently showery rain Lincolnshire's strong side ran out winners by 18 shots. With 5 ends to play it looked as if the result would once again go down to the wire between the two counties but Lincolnshire finished the stronger to complete the win. Good luck to them in the next round.

Northants result

Big thanks to the 24 players that went to Northants to represent Derbyshire in the return of the Midland counties league. With many new caps, up against last years Middleton cup runners up, we took away some positives and two winning rinks skipped by Barnett and Bowley. Can players still with outstanding availability sheets please return them if they wish to be considered for the Leicestershire game and beyond.

2022 Season Opener

Norma Hazzledine MBE

It is with great pleasure that I can report that Norma has been awarded the MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. Norma has been a stalwart and great supporter of Derbyshire Bowls for many years. She has made many friends and encouraged many bowlers to aspire to levels beyond their local club. Locally she has been a Director of Erewash Indoor Bowls Club and a leading organizer for the Silver Band Ladies outdoor club. Nationally she has been a great servant of Bowls England in many capacities and through her involvement in developing performance for elite bowlers has also become a friend of many international organizations too.

Her role in the success achieved by England's bowlers, especially in the Manchester Commonwealth Games, must not be underestimated. Crucially, though, through all these commitments Nationally and Internationally Norma never forgot her beloved Derbyshire and would do all she could to promote and support the Derbyshire bowlers, encouraging younger players especially. She was forced through ill health to play less in the last few years but she left her imprint on many bowlers with her encouragement. "Well played Dear" - a favourite phrase - Well played Norma.

News Update - January 15th. 2022

At present it is our intention to hold Finals of all competitions that lead to Leamington qualification on 31st. July 2022 as Bowls England will require the names of our qualifiers for Leamington by August 8th. 2022.

Vacancies on the County Executive Committee

We still have a vacancy for a Junior Vice-President in 2022

2022 Fixtures have been updated on this website

The FBT games have been reinstated for the 2022 season. Fixtures are shown in the Fixtures section. Bob Prati with the assistance of Mike Bowley and Mark Terrell will oversee selection and we are very keen to involve more players this year than has been possible before. In 2022 there is only one clash between Francis Burton Trophy games and EBF County games - and this may not happen if either code has lost earlier games in the season. It does mean that players do NOT have to choose between codes in 2022 - which should be good news for both!
