Balcomb date
Lincolnshire have offered us four dates for the Balcomb first round. All four dates clashed with either a Derbyshire federation county game or a Derbyshire federation competition play on day. Therefore there was no perfect date and so the game will be played on Sunday 19th of May.
2023 Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday 28th. November at Erewash Bowls Club. The meeting will commence at 7.00 p.m.
There are a number of officer positions to be filled. In particular the roles of COUNTY SECRETARY, Junior and Senior Vice President and potentially other posts to spread the work load that at present sits with too few individuals. We cannot win the group so the selectors will pick a more youthful side to look after our future with five white rose players.
Middleton and Balcomb news
Our Middleton side, with several players playing their first Middleton game, competed well at the weekend. We managed to win on two rinks and only just lose on another two losing the game by 14 shots. Ourselves and Northumberland have a dead rubber last game so we have mutually agreed to cancel the game on the 8th July.
We've more positive news to report in the Balcomb trophy where Derbyshire secured their place at the Regional finals over the weekend. Both rinks were behind at some point in the game but both kept going and secured rink wins. Broughton won 19-15, Thornhill won 21-17.
The details for the Regional finals are that players are requested to arrive by 09:30am with play commencing at 10:00. The second game starts at 2:00pm
The address of the club is Ashton Lane, York, YO24 4HX but use YO24 4DF in Sat Nav. (WhatThreeWords = solved.swim.author). The entrance to Ashton Lane is off Holgate Road, next to a bus stop on SOUTH side of road, opposite The Fox pub. The best place to park is in their car park but this is restricted to 30 vehicles.
York Railway Bowls and Social Club will be offering Bacon and Sausage Butties (Veggie sausage version available) from 08.30 until 10.15. Tea/Coffee/Cakes etc/Sandwiches will be available to purchase from 11.00 and will be available to 2.30. Their bar will be open from 12.00 and has the usual range of soft and alcoholic drinks and crisps/nuts. Please direct individual requests to the club direct (Mick O’Donnell info@yorkrailwaybsc.org.uk).
Middleton result and selection policies going forward with the current committee
A great effort was made to overcome a strong Lincolnshire side and despite being game level after 17 ends with a chance of collecting 20 points we came away with only 2 points. We now have to win our last two games and hope other results go our way. Well done all for a great effort!
The selectors would like to make the following agreed policies known for future to give clarity to everyone.
MCBA
Any affiliated player can play to gain county experience.
Middleton
To remain competitive for a small county no MCBA playing requirements are needed. Players can be selected on recent competitive form alone.
Balcomb
Good commitment must be shown to the last two previous years Middleton games. Considerations will be given for dead rubbers or exceptional circumstances.
International Trials and Middleton
Commiserations go to Derbyshire's Dan Thornhill on not making the full England team despite playing well, hopefully another chance will come next year Dan. Congratulations go to Ben Bywater on being selected again for a junior U25 trial, best of luck this year Ben. Finally it's encouraging to report that James Bowley has made the U18 future talent spotting Bowls England training day.
After some very good individual performances against Northants the selectors will meet this week to pick the first Middleton cup group game against Lincolnshire who are arguably the strongest opposition in our group. With several Middleton experienced players unavailable for this game we hope we can select a side that remains competitive to win at home. If you are not selected then please come support the team and with the group situation this year there could be the opportunity to gain that Middleton experience this season.
Executive Meeting May 2023
An Executive Meeting was called to discuss the selection of teams and the following selection panel was appointed at the Executive Meeting. Mike Bowley (who was elected at the 2022 AGM to fulfil that role) Bernie Greenough and Dan Thornhill. Both these have been acting to help selection since a February Meeting. Teams will be picked by the committee for 2023 with no Team Manager.
NORTHANTS AWAY 2:00 pm start
The match resulted in a defeat winning one rink (2 points) and losing the other rinks. However closer analysis shows that we won nearly 50% of the ends and a two further rinks were winning until the 20th. end. A further rink, having made a difficult start, losing the first five ends and going 12 shots down then won the remaining sixteen ends 15 shots to 14 and not give up. Full score cards are shown under the relevant tab for Francis Burton Trophy games.

JUNIORS
Sadly we've only managed to get 7 players available for the white rose game so we have had to cancelled this game. We hope our junior players will make themselves available for MCBA league or county executive friendlies games this season. We now have a squad of 9 players so we hope to enter again next year with the squads approval and a free date.
