Derbyshire Bowls Association

Northamptonshire MCBA away

After two years without MCBA games we wasn't sure what replies we would get from our squad but we have had a good response to the availability sheets and we will play out all our games if people keep to them. The selection committee are waiting on a few key replies before we name the side for BOTH the Northamptonshire and Warwickshire games together. Both sides will be picked the week commencing 9th May so we can welcome some new and past players back into the county teams.

The Northants venue address is detailed within the county teams section for a 2pm start. Can players please aim to be at the venue for 1:30pm. Match fee is still only £5 and there is no meal. Cobs should be available before the game to purchase individually. It's politely requested that all players who get a lift to the venue pay their driver £5 direct. We are waiting for a new delivery of shirts and jackets but have a limited selection for our new players. Shirts cost £20, Jackets cost £25 and travelling white shirts cost £10. These will be available on the match day along with county stickers. So the new players know, the dress code for playing is coloured county shirts and white trousers or shorts.

We've never won the MCBA league so don't have too high expectations but we hope to remain competitive, picking up team wins and rink wins where possible. We will use the early games for Middleton practice while at the same time developing younger players and bringing in other clubs into the county set-up to make sure the county has a future. Individually, International selectors could turn up to any county game this year, even on a wet and windy afternoon in Worcestershire. Rest assured, with three County Selectors and the County Secretary walking around the green with his clipboard all good performances will be noted.

For all MCBA games bowls with a WB stamp after the year 1985 will be legal to use after a review of the rules.

Norma Hazzledine MBE

It is with great pleasure that I can report that Norma has been awarded the MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. Norma has been a stalwart and great supporter of Derbyshire Bowls for many years. She has made many friends and encouraged many bowlers to aspire to levels beyond their local club. Locally she has been a Director of Erewash Indoor Bowls Club and a leading organizer for the Silver Band Ladies outdoor club. Nationally she has been a great servant of Bowls England in many capacities and through her involvement in developing performance for elite bowlers has also become a friend of many international organizations too.

Her role in the success achieved by England's bowlers, especially in the Manchester Commonwealth Games, must not be underestimated. Crucially, though, through all these commitments Nationally and Internationally Norma never forgot her beloved Derbyshire and would do all she could to promote and support the Derbyshire bowlers, encouraging younger players especially. She was forced through ill health to play less in the last few years but she left her imprint on many bowlers with her encouragement. "Well played Dear" - a favourite phrase - Well played Norma.

News Update - January 15th. 2022

Following announcements made by Bowls England, and meetings held with the Midland Counties Executive, the Fixture Calendar for 2022 has been updated to the best of my knowledge.

The new Middleton Cup arrangements have given Derbyshire an away fixture v Lincolnshire on the 18th. July 2022 and no doubt players will be contacted re availability for that date. As this is now a straight knock-out competition our next opponents could be either Nottinghamshire or Yorkshire on the 9th. July, followed by a Quarter Final date of 23rd. July 2022.

Our Balcomb opponents are Durham as noted above. Our next opponents will be either Nottinghamshire or Lancashire and the game is to be played on Sunday 17th. July 2022. This has necessitated a change of planned date for the 2 Wood Singles competition which was to be held on that date. Provisionally the 2 Wood Singles will now be held on Sunday June 26th. 2022

At present it is our intention to hold Finals of all competitions that lead to Leamington qualification on 31st. July 2022 as Bowls England will require the names of our qualifiers for Leamington by August 8th. 2022.

Vacancies on the County Executive Committee

We still have a vacancy for a Junior Vice-President in 2022

2022 Fixtures have been updated on this website

COUNTY CHAMPIONS (Mens section) 2021

This section has been updated to include the 2021 year's winners and runners up.

The FBT games have been reinstated for the 2022 season. Fixtures are shown in the Fixtures section. Bob Prati with the assistance of Mike Bowley and Mark Terrell will oversee selection and we are very keen to involve more players this year than has been possible before. In 2022 there is only one clash between Francis Burton Trophy games and EBF County games - and this may not happen if either code has lost earlier games in the season. It does mean that players do NOT have to choose between codes in 2022 - which should be good news for both!
